Singapore: HSBC Tree Top Walk [Macritchie Reservoir, Venus Drive]

Friday, October 17, 2014
Working in the hostel exposes me to quite a few attractions in Singapore, and one of which is this HSBC Tree Top Walk. It must have been there for a while, but I have never ever thought of stepping foot into somewhere so deep within Singapore until I've gotten my camera. [CRITIQUES, PLEASE!] Seems like a pretty good place to explore and sharpen my photography skills. My friend and I decided to check this place out just because school starts... bummer!

Finally conquered this Tree Top Walk from the shortest distance! We took about a total of 3 hours including 1 or 2 short breaks and stopping for photos along the way. Almost anyone can take this route because we didn't really know anything before embarking on the journey. Since there isn't a clear blog post that I can find while researching on how to go to this particular place, I figured out that I would post some pictures along with directions so it will be easy for those looking to go to this particular place.

The easiest way (and shortest way) to go into this place is to go in via Venus Drive, which is the cross junction of Upper Thomson Road and Sin Ming Avenue. It is slightly in between Bishan and Ang Mo Kio MRT stations for those whom are unfamiliar. You can take a bus from either stations to the Bus Stop (Opp Windsor Park, that is where I stopped at). The land mark here is the Esso station before the bus stop.

Buses available at the bus stop: 52, 132, 163, 166, 167, 410, 855 and 980
(Tip: Use gothere.sg or Singapore Bus apps to navigate your way)

If you are driving then you can just park your car at Venus Drive Car Park lot. For more details, refer to this PDF by the National Parks.

Before we got to our place, we got lost. So here's some photos we had along the way.

Looks dangerous.

We came out of our lost way to find that Venus Drive isn't where exactly we thought it'd be.

The signboard says Venus Drive is on the left but it ISN'T. Follow the arrow and Venus Drive is at the left turn in front. Edit: Apparently that's how the road signs work. But just in case for people like me, you have to go further up after the junction and turn to your left.

Venus Drive is right in front!

Turn left after you see this condominum show house

A few more minutes walk and you'll reach Venus Drive's car park. Further up is the Singapore Island Country Club.

Finally here! We were stoked.

There's supposed to be many plants and animals along the way but we aren't really enthusiasts and just really want to be on the Tree Top Walk. Notable things we saw were many monkeys and an Iguana along the way that was pointed out to us by a fellow passer by :). Be really careful of the monkeys though; especially if you have food on hand. The monkeys would attack you if you are holding any food so make sure you don't hold it out before them. And definitely do not feed them as they are wild animals and they can find their own food. If you do try to feed them chances are they will crowd around you and you won't be able to escape.

On the way in

Right this way, Sir!

You'll want to follow the signboard that leads you to the Ranger Station first, then the TreeTop Walk. To go back, simply look for Venus Drive Car Park/Exit.

ANY THE WALKING DEAD FANS? This really reminds me of the prison in Season 3 I think.

Ranger Station! There's toilets and water cooler for you.

It's as if the monkey posed for me.

I was really shocked to get this bokeh at f5.6 on my 18-55mm kit lens. Kinda feels like hunger games.

We spent about 10 minutes on the Tree Top Walk itself. It is a one way route so no turning back once you are on the connecting pathway. It was a Friday morning when we were there and there were only a couple of other people there, still pretty scenic.

Entrance! It's a one way route, so no turning back. Just like how life can only be lived once.

She wasn't posing for me...

Family portrait much?

The weather was great until we made our way out. It started drizzling but the trees were huge enough to shelter most of the rain and could do with a small umbrella. Though, I realised that I got sun burnt on the shoulders after I got home so make sure you have sunblock on anywhere that is uncovered (legs, arms) before you go!

I hope that this blog post has guided you to where you want to go. Really enjoyed this little adventure we had. Looking forward to visit similar places in the future. :)

As I've mentioned earlier, do critique on my photos. Angles, editing, and any constructive ideas. Trying to grasp the art of photography more. Do leave down a comment below, much appreciated!

(Just one last word, in case you are waiting for my Bangkok Day 3 Chatuchak post, it's gonna be up soon I hope within just another week or two... I just didn't had the inspiration to and didn't want to write without any inspiration. Thank you!)

Set your eyes on the above,
Kristy
